It’s no secret that the DJ industry is dominated by men. Google any random “definitive” ranking of today’s top DJs and you’ll be lucky to find a female’s name in the top 100. Doesn’t that seem strange to you? The folks over at Mmmmaven thought so, too, and they’re being proactive about it.
Starting on August 8, the talent agency and music institution will hold a series of events called On Deck: A Discussion of Women in the DJ Industry. These roundtable-style discussions will be a chance for female DJs and producers to talk about what it’s like to be a woman in the industry and what it takes to make it in such a male-dominated career field.
The idea to start these events came from how underrepresented women are in the industry. “During the discussion, we hope to gain a better understanding of why male dominance is an issue,” said Mmmmaven’s Director of Admissions & Community Development, Sarah Hoffman. “We are hoping this will serve to empower both men and women to address this issue and then come up with healthy solutions.”
The first event has a prime list of ladies heading up the discussion. DJs Leah V, Ju Lee, and Bianca Oblivion will be in attendance to answer all of your questions and give their unique insight into the industry.
